You might be taking some vitamins and supplements, but do you know that they actually work?

In this article we’ll take a brief look at some aspects of vitamins and nutritional supplements in a couple important areas of health.

How To Fight Colds

- Don’t take Echinacea every day as with prolonged use it blunts the body’s defenses to fight a virus. It’s really only effective for the first 2 to 3 days, but not necessary afterwards. Take a 150 mg capsule every 3 hours at the start of a cold or flu.

- Vitamin C relieves some symptoms by having an antihistamine type effect. Also as in the case of Echinacea take Vit C at the onset of a cold. ‘Buffered’ C has added minerals that decrease the vitamin’s acidity, making it easier on the digestive tract.

If you take large doses of Vit C then drink lots of water, as without sufficient liquid in your body you can develop kidney stones which are often calcium developed by the body to buffer ascorbic acid. Chewable C is not recommended as it can erode tooth enamel.

- Take maximum 100mg zinc gluconate lozenges for a few days.

For Healthier Hair, Nails, And Skin

- Patchy, dry facial skin, dry or flyaway hair, dandruff, and constant cravings for fatty foods are signs that there may be a deficiency in two of the good omega oils, which are not found in multivitamin formulas. Take 1 g evening primrose oil (omega 6), taken 2-3 times a day, and 1.8 g omega 3 oil capsules.

Beat Stress And/Or Fatigue

Make sure you get enough of all the B vitamins, and magnesium to activate them.

Combat Insomnia

Try 1 g (low quantity) of niacinamide, a no side effects version of niacin or B3. Niacinamide has a sedative effect which works by raising your level of serotonin.

For Cramps and PMS

- Magnesium relaxes the muscles and great for cramps. Take up to 400 mg per day and a further 100 mg of magnesium glyconate (a highly absorbable form) every 2 hours.

- A buildup of estrogen in the body can lead to PMS. Vitamin B6 helps the liver to break down estrogen. Take 200 mg a day or 50 g per day of an activated form. B6 is also great for relieving water retention (it’s a natural diuretic) and breast tenderness.

- The herbs Dong Quai, Black Cohosh, and False Unicorn Root are rich in plant estrogens, which help block your own estrogen from attaching to the cells in your body.

- For emotional PMS, try gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in the form of evening primrose oil. Take 1 gram 3 times a day.
